Recipients of the Foothills Event Center Rising Star ScholarshipThe Foothills Event Center has just awarded three high school students over $1,500 in college scholarships. The scholarship fund, named The Foothills Event Center Rising Star Scholarship, is in its inaugural year. The scholarships are valued at $500 per awardee and are given to Nevada County high school students who have taken part in the FFA program.

We believe that in order for a community to thrive, its young people need the support and encouragement of adults. We’ve established this scholarship fund so that Nevada County’s youth have the opportunity for leadership growth and higher education.

Pictured here are scholarship recipients Zachary Daniels, Blake Yokum, and Alyssa Pfaendler with Mardie Caldwell, the Founder and Owner of the Foothills Event Center.

“I had planned on giving out two scholarships. But, each of these three applicants was so great, I just couldn’t pass them up! Blake, Alyssa, and Zachary have shown a lot of academic achievement and performed service to our community during their high school years. They really stood out to me!” Mardie Caldwell says.

In the Fall, Zachary Daniels will be attending Sierra College, Alyssa Pfaendler will go to Butte College, and Blake Yokum is going to be enrolled at Butte Fire Academy.

Mardie Caldwell interviews scholarship recipient Blake YokumRising Star Scholarship recipient Blake Yokum is eager to attend Butte Fire Academy this year, and already has experience in the field of Fire Science. In high school, along with serving as an FFA committee chair, Blake worked at the Rough & Ready Fire Department as a Junior Firefighter. There, he was able to assist with medical calls and can go on wildland fires upon turning 18. Blake is pictured here, being interviewed by Mardie Caldwell.

Zachary Daniels plans for a career in the agriculture business, following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. Zachary has been working on his family property, tending the property and helping out with the livestock. “I’ve been getting interested in soil science and I’d like to focus on that in college. Being involved in FFA during high school really helped my public speaking skills” he shares.

Alyssa Pfaendler is turning her love of working with children into a career path. She’ll be a student at Butte College this Fall, with the goal of becoming a pediatrician. In high school, Alyssa was a part of the cheerleading squad and was involved in FFA on the livestock judging team. Through her high school, Alyssa was able to take classes in Agriculture Biology and Agriculture Anatomy, sparking her interest in the medical field.
