men dancing at the Purim celebrationHere at the Foothills Event Center earlier this month, Chabad of Grass Valley held a joyous celebration to commemorate Purim. The festival included a family-friendly community dinner, a raffle for those in costume, and lively music, l’chaim, and dancing. “We love using the Foothills for our events. Everyone there is so helpful and kind. We’ve had only positive experiences working with them. Thanks, Megan, Cory, Audrey and all the rest!” says Nochum Chyena Yusewitz, the Director at Chabad of Grass Valley.

The festival of Purim is recognized yearly by the Jewish community on the 14th of Adar (a Hebrew month). In 2018, Purim began the night of Wednesday, February 28th, and continued through Thursday, March 1. Purim honors the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the book of Esther.

Purim feast at the Foothills Event CenterThe Purim celebration at the Foothills included a fun raffle for anyone who arrived in costume, and the opportunity to complete all four commandments of Purim: giving to the needy, a reading of the Megillah, the festive Purim meal, and Mishloach Manot, which means sending gifts of food to friends. Chabad of Grass Valley’s celebration included their Hebrew School Purim Band and mind reading by Matthew Mayavi.

“It was so so beautiful to celebrate Purim together with so many friends – who are like family! May the joy we felt last night continue throughout the year!” exclaimed Yusewitz.
